The recent Porter Research/
Billian's HealthDATA webinar on providers'
perceptions of Health Information Exchange attracted more than 500 registrants, proving what a
popular topic this is for the healthcare industry. The presentation featured guest speakers Cynthia
Porter, President of Porter Research, Allison Norfleet, Vice President of Business Development at
Porter Research/Billian's HealthDATA, and Guy McAllister, Chief Information Officer at Tift
Regional Medical Center, a not-for-profit community hospital serving 12 counties. It dove into the
results of a hospital executive study conducted by Porter Research and Billian's HealthDATA in
October 2010.
The study and webinar addressed:
- Concerns, challenges, and roadblocks;
- Tangible benefits of HIE;
- Health IT vendor preparedness;
- Impact of the HITECH Act and meaningful use legislation on HIE strategy and planning;
- and details of Tift Regional Medical Center's experience with HIE.
It came as no surprise that the more than 120 C-suite/director-level health executives
surveyed showed that cost and funding are still the largest barriers to health information exchange
at their facilities. What did come as surprise, however was the fact that nearly half of
respondents rated themselves as mostly prepared to meet Stage 1 Meaningful Use requirements, but
only 10 percent indicated they are ready to meet requirements for Stage 2 and 3 - requirements that
have not yet been clearly outlined.
Cynthia Porter recently shared several thoughts about the study's results with
Healthcare
Informatics' Associate Editor Jennifer Prestigiacomo. Slides from the study and webinar may be
